DIABETIC ORAL HEALTH

Patients with diabetes are 4.2 times more likely to develop periodontal disease than healthy patients, being one of the most important risk factors in the development of oral disorders. Diabetics, while maintaining good blood glucose control, have reduced salivary flow and elevated glucose levels in saliva.
Reduced salivary flow dries out the mucosa of the oral cavity, which can easily become damaged and more susceptible to infection by opportunistic microorganisms such as Candida Albicans. On the other hand, the increase of glucose in saliva leads to an alteration of the microflora of bacterial plaque that influences the development of periodontal conditions and caries. In the gums, this imbalance alters the ability to resolve inflammation and subsequent repair, which accelerates the destruction of periodontal support tissues.
For these reasons, people with diabetes should take special care of their mouth to help prevent oral health problems related to their disease such as gum disease, tooth decay, delayed healing and tendency to infection, mouth ulcers (canker sores), salivary gland dysfunction, oral fungal infection, lichen planus and lichenoid reactions (inflammatory skin disease), among others.
