Los pacientes con diabetes tienen una probabilidad 4,2 veces mayor de desarrollar enfermedades periodontales que los pacientes sanos, siendo uno de los factores de riesgo más importantes en el desarrollo de trastornos bucodentales. Los diabéticos, aún manteniendo un buen control de la glucosa en la sangre, presentan una reducción del flujo salivar y niveles elevados de glucosa en la saliva.
La reducción del flujo salivar reseca la mucosa de la cavidad bucal que puede sufrir daño fácilmente y ser más susceptible a infecciones por microorganismos oportunistas como Candida Albicans. Por otro lado, el incremento de la glucosa en la saliva produce una alteración de la microflora de la placa bacteriana que influye en el desarrollo de afecciones periodontales y caries. En las encías, este desequilibrio, altera la capacidad de resolución de la inflamación y de reparación posterior, lo que acelera la destrucción de los tejidos de soporte periodontales.
Por estos motivos la persona con diabetes debe cuidar especialmente su boca para ayudar a prevenir los problemas de salud bucal vinculados a su enfermedad como son: enfermedad de las encías, caries, retraso en la cicatrización y tendencia a la infección, aparición de úlceras bucales (aftas), disfunción en las glándulas salivares, infección oral fúngica, liquen plano y las reacciones liquenoides (enfermedad inflamatoria de la piel), entre otras.
